Fondation Beyeler

During Art Basel, many visitors plan their schedules around the exhibition halls and related events. However, those who want to experience Basel more deeply should consider heading to Riehen, in the northeast of the city. Located here, Fondation Beyeler is more than an art museum: it is a place where architecture, nature and art come together as a single experience. Designed by the renowned architect Renzo Piano, the building makes extensive use of natural light and creates a seamless connection between its interiors and the surrounding parkland.

While Art Basel reflects the current state of the art market, Fondation Beyeler presents a more leisurely way of experiencing art. Many collectors and gallerists visit between events, viewing works in an atmosphere entirely different from that of the fair. Even without a particular exhibition in mind, there are of reasons to visit. The quiet residential neighbourhood, parkland and distinctly orderly Swiss landscape offer a moment to step away from the bustle of Art Basel and gather one’s thoughts.

Kunstmuseum Basel

Kunstmuseum Basel is Switzerland’s oldest public art museum and a cultural institution with one of Europe’s leading collections. Its extensive holdings include works by major figures in art history, from Holbein to Picasso, Cézanne, Monet and Rothko, reflecting Basel’s long tradition of supporting and collecting art.

While Art Basel presents new work and the latest movements in the art market, Kunstmuseum Basel reveals how art accumulates value over time. If the fair offers an encounter with the art of today, the museum provides an understanding of its history and context. This is why many collectors and art advisers visit Kunstmuseum Basel before or after attending Art Basel. For first-time visitors, Art Basel may be the main reason for coming to the city. But for those who want to understand Basel itself, Kunstmuseum Basel is an essential stop.
